c&c (comments and criticisms) sessions
by wastefulspace on January 31, 2008
The AWM was really one of the most unaccomplished practice shoots to date.
I was showing the other pictures that didn’t made the cut to my teacher. Whom I share photos to each night over at yahoo messenger and here are the our c&c session. (translation of some words are inside the parenthesis)
picture#1 : the mis-angled shadow

him: this would look nice
me: if?
him: from the other end
him: left side
me: ahh :)
him: you know the feeling na parang putol ang paa or kamay mo (your arm or leg is chopped off) with this picture
me: ooh
me: wait (wait)
me: i take it from the left side?
him: yeah
me : oooh
me : :)
me : sige (alright) next time :)
kaotep: something to do with the light
picture#2 : blue sky envy, composition craptastic!

me: masuya ka nalang sa akong blue sky photos (just get jealous of my blue sky photos)
me: :P
him: damn the blue sky
him: :))
him: too many disturbing elements babe
him: freakin buildings
me: I KNOW
me: INIS NA INIS AKO SA KANILA (I WAS SO PISSED AT THEM!)
me: =))
him: sana pumunta ka sa gitna (You should’ve gone to the center)
me: PARANG (I was like) GADCRAP IT IM GONNA BULLDOZE EM DOWN
me: =))
him: also if there were no buildings, i dont get this shot
me: eh?
him: it doesn’t make sense
him: except for the wonderful blue sky
him: also you cropped this one
him: what do you call that structure
me: eeeeeeeeeek
me: :))
me: i was only aiming for the sky :(
him: ohhh fine fine, beautiful sky
him: :))
me: :((
me: pero yes (but, yes)
me: maraming noise elements nga talaga (there were a lot of noise elements)
him: the composition is horrible
me: aminado ako (I admit)
him: but the sky is great
me: ..
me: horrible pa talaga (you really had to use horrible)
me: =))
him: well it is noh (it really is) hehehe you wanted me to be honest :p
me: :)
me: i admit to the faults
me: :)
me: moving on
picture#3 : the pretty blue sky, a cropped subject and nothing else

him: is this another picture of the blue blue sky?
me: no
him: and the green green grass?
me: you can bash it however you want
him: grass?
me: …
me: :)
him: there is no subject
him: or your subject is cropped
picture#4 : the fallen cross..

him: wahhh why did you cut off the cross :(
me: yeah
me: kasi (because)
me: if nasama ko (if I did)
me: may ibang elements na masasama (there will be other elements with it together)
me: i think may bahay dun sa side na yun (i think there was a house over at that side)
him: pwede ka naman mag move to the side bai (you can move to the side bai)
him: to compensate :)
me: i did
me: alam mo bang gumagapang gapang na ako (did you know I was already crawling around)
me: sa damo damo (in the grass)
me: :))
me: di ko talaga maayos (I couldn’t fix it)
him: bai, damng cross dun :) (bai, there are a lot of crosses there) you can always choose another angle :)
him: di ka mauubusan ng patterns :) (you won’t run out of patterns :)) so you deserve a spanking
me: :-<
him: :p
him: for not trying
me: next
him: sayang! (too bad!) this would have been perfect
him: with the blue blue sky and green green grass
me: …
me: yeah i know
me: anyway..
As you can see how the conversation went, the cross part really bit my butt (eh?the words just came out), I know it was a potential for a perfect shot if not for the mangled cross. I didn’t know how to explain myself (maybe because I was sunk so bad) and the only thing he liked on my set, is the one I shot accidentally, here’s the picture
picture#5 : Methinks it’s bad Hethinks it’s good.

me: eto mali (this one’s wrong)
me: blue sky lang (just the blue sky)
me: hehe
him: baket mali? (why do you think it’s wrong?)
me: too much space there *points to section between the center cross and the green grass
him: no i dont think so
me: noisy yung likod (the background is noisy)
him: kasi you have the trees
him: except for the buildings
me: yung buildings
him: well if you think bout it
him: the buildings provide a stark contrast
him: because of the way they fill the space sa likod
me: true
him: unlike here (see picture #1)
him: na nasa baba lang sila (the buildings are just below)
him: talagang pampagulo (it really makes the picture confusing)
me: i see your point..
picture#6 : Leading Lines to nowhere.

him: this one is ok, symmetrical but
him: i dont have a reference subject
him: much better if you made it 3 columns
me: true
him: yung 2 columns kasi, they’re leading lines (because the two columns are leading lines
him: but leading to where?
me: wala .. :) (nothing)
picture#6 : confused framing.

me: hindi ko alam ano talaga intention ko dito (I don’t know what is my intention on this really)
me: =))
him: yan din iniisip ko, kung ano gusto mo dito :D (that’s what I thought, what did you want here…)
me: una dapat framing (at first, framing…)
me: tapos (and then)
me: di ko magawa (i couldn’t do it…)
me: :))
him: pede sya (it could be), frame within a frame
me: :)
Basically the c&c session ended on a lighter note, when the words were kept and tucked away for reference in the future as well as promises to do better. He did notice my crappy state as my replies were clipped and very monosyllabic, unlike the usual bubbly, cheerful, 4lines/second type.
I learned a lot from that, it one of the first few times he bashed me very badly. But I was grateful for it.
Even if the comments were nothing personal and I was like everybody else when he does c&cs… I guess I like it that way. Because I want to be better.
That’s all. :)
