Got me a new toy…
by wastefulspace on April 1, 2008

It’s small. blue. takes pictures. eats film. and floats….

Floats?!

Yep! It’s a blessing (or a curse) that I’m around Power Books at Greenbelt and I went to check the camera store in front. Due to the immense demand for Waterproof cameras (I drool at thee, Olympus SW1030), There were a hefty display of both digital and film cameras with waterproof casings as cheap as around 8000 pesos (approx 200 usd) for a digital and as expensive as 1500 pesos (approx 40 usd) for film.

Being the cheapskate that I was (knowing it will be the day I will buy myself an Olympus), and from the horror stories of friends who had to shell out a fat load of cash for fixing their supposed warrantied waterproof cameras because it got, well, wet, and remembering the agony of accidentally breaking a colleague’s pentax w10 (Also, by getting it wet), I am dubious with the capabilities of these so-called waterproof cameras and their cases. And how else do you test it? No choice but to dump it in the water and hope for the best.

Anybody who can prove to me otherwise may freely do so.

Back to the story. So I was checking out to see if they have the Tura Underwater Film Camera that I want, but there was none. So I looked around and saw this little blue camera in a pretty sturdy case. I checked the price. And it was well within my budget of around 10 dollars (400 pesos).

I checked and re-checked. Underwater? Check! Reloadable? Check! 135 film? Check! So, off I went to see Bai with our new toy.

hello, Snap Sights Reusable Underwater Camera.

When I got home, I took out the cam and did a stress test with the casing. I stuffed in little wettable items and dunked the casing into the sink with running water. Well, well, well…it floats! so I proceeded to place it under the water seeing if the contents will get wet.

I took it out, wiped the case clean and there wasn’t a drop of water inside the camera case. QA test passed!

Tomorrow, into the shower with this little guy…says it can go as deep as 25 feet. Since I only do some snorkeling. 25 feet is pretty much alright with me.

Stumble it!
